Oh, this was a great day. It was one of those days where a great adventure took on a life of its own and kept us out far past sunset. We had family in town and headed to Half Moon Bay with a simple plan. We’d eat clam chowder at Sam’s and hang out at Mavericks Beach.
We decided to switch things up this time and climb the cliffs just off of the parking lot versus following the main path. We’d never done that before and we saw people head up the cliffs the last time we were there. I also noticed that’s the same path they took near Pillar Point Head in the movie Chasing Mavericks. We had to check it out for ourselves.
The view from the top of the cliffs was beautiful and the secluded beach below looked irresistible. We climbed down the other side of the cliff and didn’t come back until dark. The beach was gorgeous and the waves were wild. We wandered, relaxed, talked, and took photos for hours.
Right at about 3 PM, surfers started climbing down the cliffs. Mavericks is a famous extreme surfing spot, and during the right time of year, the waves are enormous. It was fun to see the surfers trickle in one by one and run to the ocean to take to the waves.
As night drew in, clouds rolled in and the whole scene grew even more beautiful. As lovely as it was to watch, it reminded us that it was almost time to head home. We didn’t want to go.
The ocean was breathtaking as the sun disappeared over the horizon. We lingered so Shane could captured a few more nighttime photos.
It was completely dark outside by the time we climbed back up the cliffs. We pulled out our little flashlights, climbed up the hills and headed back to the car. Some of the surfers were also tying up their boards and calling it a night. Believe it or not, a few of them were still surfing when we left. Such brave spirits!
It was such a perfect beach day. We found a new fave spot, and we’re happy we found it with such fun adventure buddies.
