Sometimes it’s the unexpected photo that turns out to be one of the best of the day. Before this picture was taken, Andrea and I spent the entire day driving up and down the coast between Santa Cruz and Pescadero, CA. We ended up stopping at several locations to take photos and even hiked about 3 to 4 miles at one location. Finally, at the end of the day, we ended up at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse in Pescadero, CA to take some sunset and long exposure photos.

After a full day of nothing but clear sky some low level clouds rolled in just as we pulled up to this spot. I had just got out of the car and as I looked around to see if this was the place I wanted to setup a tripod, I noticed what was happening with the sun and clouds over the lighthouse.

Andrea was hanging out the passenger side window of the car waiting for me to give the OK that this was our spot. She had one of our cameras out, taking pictures of me of all things, looking over the location. I yelled out “Quick! Give me the camera!”, grabbed it, ran back up a small hill and took this picture. After that we decided this was the spot to set up for the rest of our shots.

The clouds broke up right after I captured this image, so I felt very lucky to be at the right place at the right time with a camera in reach. It’s also a very good thing Andrea likes to play paparazzi during our adventures, otherwise the camera would have been out of reach.
